Raising funds for both British Lung Foundation and Great North Air Ambulance, a team of 21 adventurous cyclists took part in the famous C2C cycle trail from Whitehaven in the West to Tynemouth in the East supporting two very worthwhile charities.
Leaving Whitehaven on a rainy Friday morning in June having dipped the back wheels of the bikes in the Irish sea, the team set off to conquer the hills and towns between East and West. The route took the team through Loweswater and Keswick and through to Penrith covering some very picturesque countryside in the Lake District.
Dirt tracks, roads, mountains and fells were all part of the difficult terrain undertaken in the energy sapping worsening weather conditions. Travelling towards Alston and covering some very steep terrain through villages of Melmerby, Allenheads, Rookhope to Alston. A distance of 78 miles and climbs of 5500ft was the target for day 1. A welcome hot meal provided sustenance for the onwards journey to complete the cross Britain challenge in 2 days.
The number of punctures grew, but the desire to carry on to the finish was never in doubt on the two very wet and energy sapping days. With the steep terrain covered, the much less challenging gradient running down through to Newcastle and ultimately into Tynemouth where the wheels were again able to enjoy the sea water in the North Sea, this time at the other side of the country.
Some 146 miles successfully covered during the trip in total.

A fantastic £2,000 was raised for the British Lung Foundation.
